The motifs did not arrive from a catalogue. The lotus and the goose on a Paithani pallu are the lotus and the goose on a ceiling at Ajanta, a hundred kilometres up the road.

A naksha is drafted before a thread is thrown: the motif is plotted square by square, and then the squares are woven. It is why a border takes days and a pallu takes months.
